The Island of Pasman is part of the Zadar archipelago. It is a small island with only about 60 sq. km in size and over 3,000 residents. Although the Pasman Island consists of Cretaceous limestone in the west, dolomites in the east and fertile sandy deposits in several areas, it is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the Adriatic Sea because its location allows the water to change course four times a day. One of these beaches is located in Mrljane, a village also popular for its swamp with healing mud.
The main communities in the Island of Pasman are Tkon and the fishing village of Pasman. Outside Tkon is the Benedictine Monastery of St. Cosmas and St. Damian, which was built in the early 12th century. Other attractions in Pasman Island include the Franciscan Monastery of St. Duje in Kraj, the Roman ruins scattered throughout the island and undersea caves that are open for certified divers.
The economy of Pasman Island is based on growing of olives, vegetables, fruit and vines, farming, livestock breeding, fishing and tourism. Local restaurants, pubs and wine cellars in the Island of Pasman boast fresh olive oil, fish and vegetables. A wide range of private accommodation is available, including campsites, inns, weekend houses, and rooms.
