Lovran is a town with a long and diverse history, and with a hundred-year-old tradition of tourism. It is considered to be one of the most elite resorts on the Croatian coast. Lovran got its name after the laurel, which grows abundantly in evergreen groves in the town and in the surrounding areas. Lovran has preserved its historical core and medieval city plan. The old part of town was surrounded by defensive walls and bastions. Over time, houses have been built on the foundations and walls of these. Lovran, along with Opatija, is considered to be the most prominent tourist resort on the famous Opatija Riviera. The favorable geographic location of Lovran allows day excursions to some of our most beautiful National Parks (Plitvice, Brijune and Risnjak), the coast of Istria with its villages, islands of Rab, Krk and Cres, Venice in Italy, as well as many other towns nearby. Lovran is proud of its 12-km-long footpath, which connects several resorts along the Opatija Riviera - Lovran, Ika, Icici, Opatija and Volosko. Undisturbed by traffic, a walk along the coastal footpath provides an opportunity to relax and experience a typical Mediterranean landscape. The construction of the footpath began in 1885 and was finished in 1889, when Opatija was declared a climatic spa. The surrounding area has 24 hiking trails and 9 mountain-biking trails.
