The Romans named the Island of Lastovo "The Emperor's Island" due to its numerous meadows, abundant forests, and surrounding beautiful islands and cliffs. It may seem isolated due to the distance from the mainland; however, a harmonious blend of peace and tranquility, clear seawater and impressive underwater scenery, make Lastovo a unique destination. It was proclaimed a Nature Park in 2006. Lastovo can be reached by ferry and by Catamaran from Split (Split - Vela Luka - Lastovo connection). It can also be reached via Korcula, with boarding in Vela Luka. Facilities include scooter and bicycle rentals (for touring around the island), as well as a diving school. Disco club and a coffee bar are located in the nearby cove of Saint Michael, only several hundred meters away. Beach volleyball is played there, and it is also the island's gathering spot for young adults. Every summer there are several concert performances held in the cove of Saint Michael. The very first weekend in August is particularly busy. That is when a traditional Jazz festival takes place, which has now been held for many years in a row.
