When we go 54 km from Dubrovnik on Peljesac Peninsula heading north-west, we find the small fortified town of Ston. The town is circled by medieval walls, making it a well known place among history lovers. Still, there are not too many visitors coming to this town yet, making Ston (and Mali Ston that is another small town near by), a great place for those who want to get away from regular tourist routes in southern Dalmatia.
From July to August each year, salt harvesting takes place, making it the prefect time to visit this town. Salt production is one an important stream of income ever sine Middle ages. Saltwork factories in Ston are reputable and also some of the oldes in whole Europe. People here harvest salt by hand before loading it onto wagons to get it distributed. Ston is also know due to them cultivating molluscs like mussels, oysters and other shells. The town is quiet and perfect for a vacation with the whole family. There are also many great restaurants here. Ontop of Pozvizd hill there is a fortress, named after the hill. It offers some of the most beautiful views on everything that surrounds the area.
